HRM & the design of work

Design of work is formatting all activities of a job designation in a methodical manner in order to achieve organizational goals at the end.

According to Armstong, (2010) 'Job design indicates the content of jobs in order to satisfy work requirement & meet the personal needs of the job holder,hence increasing level of employee engagement'.

There are several objectives are expected from proper work design by the management 

* Effective & efficient usage of human resource 
* Smooth & uninterrupted work flow at all times 
* Enable workers to work with autonomy, challenge & satisfaction
* Encourage team work
* Healthy & safe environment
* Enabling workers to deliver their out put in a proper way 

However there are few factors affecting job design in organizations 

1.The characteristics of job - Part time or full time/ No of working hours & days / targets etc.

2.Characteristics of task structure - Nature of activities / Reporting layers etc.

3.Motivation - Causes required workers to repeat a behavior
  
4.Implication of group activities - interconnected nature of job activities 

Based on above, It is clear that smart working is the main objective of design of work which drives organization in to success effectively.Smart working is doing same amount of work faster & more efficiently than normal time consumption for same.It reduces unnecessary time consumption for completing jobs & it will directly helps to achieve goals & objectives of the organization efficiently.We can find following characteristics of smart working in an organization

- Good self management
- Efficient virtual / work groups
- Focus on outcome base indicators
- Flexible working conditions
- Utilizing advance technologies
- Direct linkage between smart work & business goals

All employers should give necessary flexibility to all employees In order to encourage smart working within the organization & due to same employees will act with motivation, freedom, satisfaction which would increase the productivity at the end. There are several types of flexibility can be seen in common as follows,

1. Functional flexibility - Allow employees to shift to another task due to multi skills of them as per their convenience 

2. Numerical flexibility - Changing employed number according to market demand

3. Financial flexibility - Encourage performance based paying system 

Conclusion 
Proper design of work is vital for the success of any organization as same will ease duties, tasks assigned to employees whose will work with motivation , courage , self control which will drive the organization to success in a sustainable manner.
