MN7185 : Leadership & Strategic Management - Leaders are managers, but managers are not necessarily leaders
Leaders are managers, but managers are not necessarily leaders
Leadership :-
Leaders are always stands out of the box & set directions by their own with innovative ideas by driving followers in to goals.
According to Rost, 1991 there are four types of emerging leadership approaches in 21st century as follows
- Authentic leaderships, authenticity of leaders & their leadership is emphasized
- Spiritual leadership, focuses on leadership that utilizes values & sense of calling & membership to motivate followers
- Servant leadership, puts the leader in the role of servant, who utilizes " caring principles"to focus on followers become more autonomous ,knowledgeable & like servants themselves
- Adaptive leadership,in which leaders encourage followers to adapt by confronting & solving problems ,challenges & changes
In other way "The ability to impress the will of the leader on those led & induce obedience , respect, loyalty & corporation" (Moor, 1927).
Basically leaders are born & they will remain in the heart of many peoples in the world due to their extra ordinary commitment ,consistency & innovative ways.
eg:Nelson Mandella, Mahatma Gandhi , Martin Luthor King
It is clear that leaders have followers as their good views are always accepted with open arm response by followers irrespective of organization, village, province or country.
Management:-
Managers are highly concern with complying with imposed set of procedures, routing & stability of the organization. ''Controls ''are the main concern under management & they guide subordinates to achieve goals by following set of activities imposed by the organization.Hence all subordinates have to follow routing works & they can not perform with their innovative ideas which will much important to the success of the organization.
As per Fayol, 1916 the primary function of management were planning, organizing, staffing & controlling.Accordingly managers can not perform by them self & they abide by specific set of activities of the organization they work for & need to guide subordinates accordingly. This management traits has been evolved mainly with the start of industrialism in the world.
Hence my personal view is managers can be easily replaced as their leadership qualities are not properly utilized by respective organizations.
Similarities of leadership & management
- Both involves influence
- Both entails working with people
- Both concern with effective goal accomplishment
Differences of leadership & management

Reliant on charismatic authority / Have followers
|
Legal rational authority / Have subordinates

Finally it is clear with above findings & respective nature of activities leaders are always guide followers with their own charismatic authority & controls is some what there under them. Hence we can assume that leaders always be part of managers due to controlling activities but managers need not to be leaders as they always were instructed to follow set of activities imposed by respective organizations.
